This city might not be so dissimilar from the one I come from. The City is divided into twenty-six Districts. Each of these has a Nest, which is protected by a Wing—think of this as the inner city, such as where we presumably are now, and the Wing as our oh-so-gracious-whomever keeping us from going out-of-bounds. Outside of the Nest are the Backstreets of the District, where those with less fortunate lives stay, at the mercy of gangs and unscrupulous means of living. Beyond our fair City are the Ruins, where it's said magic exists, and just beyond that are the Outskirts, which is an incredibly dangerous place few people go to willing and even fewer people return from. I have little faith in this city, so it's more likely bullshit, but who knows? Maybe it is "really, ultra messed up" out there.

There's checkpoints and fences that divide Nests and Backstreets, so there might be something similar in place. I wouldn't know for sure. My work never takes me out that way.

Though you'd probably consider some of the things they can do "magical".
K Corp's Singularity is used produce medicine that heals injuries, physical and mental, quickly. It's quite a godsend for those who regularly traverse dangerous terrain, though they're too pricey for ordinary folk to get their hands on. I'd wager, anyway. I'm sure if you're part of their Wing, you get access to them no problem.

W Corp came into possession of a teleportation technology sometime ago too, if I'm remembering my history right. They use it to operate their WARP trains, which gets you anywhere in the City in ten seconds flat. No harm, no foul. Isn't that nice?

If you lose an arm, K Corp's technology will regrow it in no time flat. If you want to get from one end of the City to the other, you can take a WARP train, and after waiting a mere ten seconds you can step out and be at your destination. Color me impressed if this type of thing is more common than any of us thought, though. They're considered extremely important and life-changing technologies where I'm from, hence "Singularity".
